Before becoming part of the soundtrack for Susan Osberg's dance film "Mining the Moon", Many Moons emerged as a collaboration between Obsidian Soundsystem and singer/songwriter Liz Kelly. The music track started as somewhat of an accident - While Jonny and J were experimenting with the iOS music making app Figure, a software glitch caused the app to freeze, resulting in it generating a drone that was modulated by a muted kick drum giving it an unexpected groove. Jonny & J liked the resulting sound so much that they captured it into Ableton Live and developed it into an arrangement. Not long after, Liz added her inspired vocal performance to the track, which gave further shape and intention to the composition.

When OS was tapped a few months later to create original music for "Mining The Moon", they presented Many Moons in addition to several other new pieces created specifically for the film. Director Susan Osberg loved it, and with some slight re-working it fit right in with the other pieces composed for the soundtrack. The film version of the song will soon be released as part of the full soundtrack album for "Mining The Moon".
